Overview of Pench Tiger Reserve
Pench Tiger Reserve is one of India’s most famous national parks, located in the heart of central India. This beautiful park sits across two states – Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The park was established in 1975 and covers a total area of 1,180 sq km. It combines Pench National Park and surrounding forest areas. The reserve became a Tiger Reserve in 1992 under India’s Project Tiger program.
Pench is located about 90 km from Nagpur city in Maharashtra. This park is special because it inspired Rudyard Kipling’s famous book “The Jungle Book.” The stories of Mowgli were set in these very forests. Today, Pench is home to around 50-60 tigers, making it one of the best places in India to see these magnificent cats.
The park is divided into different zones for safari tours. The main zones include Turia Gate, Karmajhiri Gate, and Jamtara Gate on the Madhya Pradesh side. The Maharashtra side has Sillari Gate and Khapa Gate. Each zone offers unique wildlife viewing opportunities.
History of Pench Tiger Reserve
The name “Pench” comes from the Pench River that flows through the park. This river is the lifeline of the forest and provides water to all the animals living here. The area has a rich history dating back to ancient times when local tribal communities lived in harmony with nature.
In the early 1900s, this area was used for hunting by British officers and Indian royalty. However, hunting was banned in 1935 to protect the wildlife. In 1965, the area was declared a wildlife sanctuary. Later in 1975, it became a national park, and in 1992, it was given the status of a Tiger Reserve.
The park is famous worldwide because Rudyard Kipling visited this area and wrote “The Jungle Book” based on his experiences here. The characters like Mowgli, Baloo the bear, and Bagheera the panther all belong to these forests.
Wildlife and Biodiversity in Tiger Reserve
Flora of Tropical Forests
Pench Tiger Reserve is a treasure of plant life. The forest is mainly Southern Tropical dry deciduous type, which means the trees shed their leaves in dry seasons. The park has over 1,200 species of plants including trees, shrubs, and herbs.
The most common trees in Pench are Teak, Mahua, Tendu, Amaltas, and Bamboo. Teak trees are the most abundant and can grow very tall. During spring season, the forest becomes colorful with flowers blooming on different trees.

- Mahua – Bears sweet flowers that animals love
- Tendu – Leaves used to make bidis
- Amaltas – Has beautiful yellow flowers
- Bamboo – Grows in large patches

The forest floor is covered with grass species like Kush and Khus. During monsoon, the entire forest becomes lush green and beautiful.
Fauna and Tiger Sightings
Pench Tiger Reserve is famous as the “Land of Mowgli” with rich wildlife. The park is home to around 50-60 Bengal tigers, making it one of India’s best tiger reserves. Besides tigers, the park houses many other animals like leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, gaur (Indian bison), sambars, spotted deer, nilgai, wild boar, and langur monkeys.
The park is also a bird lover’s paradise with over 285 species of birds. You can spot beautiful birds like Malabar Pied Hornbill, Indian Roller, Paradise Flycatcher, Crested Serpent Eagle, Peacocks, Kingfishers, and many more during your safari.
Pench also has various reptiles including Indian Python, Cobra, Russell’s Viper, and Monitor Lizards. The Pench River flowing through the park supports aquatic life and provides water to all animals, making it the lifeline of the forest.
Jungle Safari Experience in Pench Tiger Reserve
Jungle safari is the main attraction of Pench Tiger Reserve, offering exciting tours to see tigers and wildlife in their natural habitat. The park provides two safari options – Jeep Safari for maximum 6 people with one guide, perfect for wildlife photography and close viewing, and Canter Safari, a larger vehicle for 20 people that’s more economical for family groups. Online booking is required well in advance.
Pench has five main safari zones. Turia Gate (90 km from Nagpur) is a core zone with excellent tiger sightings. Karmajhiri Gate (85 km) is the most popular zone with high chances of tiger encounters. Jamtara Gate (95 km) is quieter and perfect for bird watching. Sillari Gate (75 km) on Maharashtra side is less crowded, while Khapa Gate (80 km) offers good tiger territory with beautiful forest tracks.
Safari timings change seasonally – October to November (6:00 AM-10:00 AM, 2:30 PM-6:30 PM), December to February (6:30 AM-11:00 AM, 2:00 PM-6:00 PM), March to April (5:30 AM-10:00 AM, 3:00 PM-6:30 PM), and May to June (5:00 AM-9:30 AM, 3:30 PM-7:00 PM). The park closes during monsoon (July-September). Visitors must carry photo ID, wear earth-colored clothes, maintain silence, and follow guide instructions for a safe wildlife experience.
